چکیده

W-CDMA and SW-CDMA air interfaces are based on code division multiple access and as in all spread spectrum systems the initial acquisition procedure is a challenging issue. This procedure is identified as cell search in W-CDMA and beam search in SWCDMA. Although the terrestrial air interface W-CDMA and the satellite one SW-CDMA are very similar, the suggested cell/beam search procedures are different. In this paper, the two procedures are introduced and the numerical results are shown both in single path and in multipath propagation environments. Cell search and beam search procedures are compared in terms of time to acquisition and receiver complexity.

Initial synchronization procedure in S-UMTS networks for multimedia broadcast multicast services

W-CDMA and SW-CDMA air interfaces require that a user equipment in a given cell acquires slot and frame synchronization, and identifies the primary scrambling code used by the target cell before starting communications. This synchronization procedure is identified as cell search procedure in W-CDMA and beam search procedure in SW-CDMA. Notwithstanding the extensive commonalities between the two...

Mobile-Based TDoA Estimation in UMTS Using Multichannel Serial Correlator

This paper presents a novel Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) estimation algorithm for mobile station positioning in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) based on cell search procedure defined by 3GPP. Standardized method for Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) measurement and cell search procedure are stated. Furthermore, proposed solution for TDoA parameter estimation via multichann...

Performance Analysis of Ubiquitous Wireless Connectivity in a 3G/IEEE 802. 11 Integrated Network

UMTS networks promise to offer always on, ubiquitous connectivity with relatively low data rates for moderate to high mobility users in macro cell environments. On the other hand, IEEE 802. 11 (WLAN) offers much higher data rates, comparable to 3G and other wireless local area networks, to users with low mobility characteristics in smaller cell environments. Where UMTS/WLAN networks overlap, a ...

UMTS radio network evaluation and optimization beyond snapshots

This paper is concerned with UMTS radio network design. The task is to reconfigure antennas and the related cells as to improve network quality. In contrast to second generation GSM networks, interference plays a paramount role in the design of third generation radio networks. A recent compact characterization of a radio network through a linear equation system allows to assess cell load and in...

Comparison of different meta-heuristics to solve the global planning problem of UMTS networks

In this paper, we investigate and compare, through extensive simulation, the use of three meta-heuristic algorithms in order to find ‘‘good’’ feasible solutions for the global topology planning problem of universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) networks. The latter has been shown to be NP-hard as it is composed of three different subproblems (each one being NP-hard): the cell planning...
